Market Skate BBQ Recap - Ultra Mega Post

Well after sorting through nearly 250 pictures, overcoming 2 computer crashes, and numerous skate seshes when I should have been writing, The Market Skate BBQ recap is finally done! It's pretty long so make sure to read the whole thing and peep all the photos.

What a day! For anyone who loves skateboarding, chillin with friends, and having an all around sweet ass time, The Skateboard Market's 12th anniversary Skate BBQ @ Edora Skatepark was the place to be Sunday afternoon. Postponing the event one day turned out to be a wise choice as the sun was out and shining all day, producing an epic day for shredding. The turnout was amazing and those in attendance were treated to some incredible skateboarding.

I showed up to Edora at about 11:30 hoping to get some riding in before the crowds showed up and the Fiesta de Market began, but apparently that's what everyone else was trying to do also. The park was already pretty crowded so I just pushed around for a bit, talked to some peeps, and actually had a pretty nice little pre-event bowl sesh. Skaters young and old were showing up to get their skate on and oh did they skate. During my bowl sesh, I was taking turns with a couple of older guys who were ripping the bowl to pieces. Airing out of the 9-ft bowl, grinding the concrete coping... Killing it. It's so rad to sesh with a group of skaters who are all pushing each other to go bigger.

By about 2:30 the grill was fired up, the vert wall was constructed, and everyone was warmed up and ready to rock n roll.... Literally. Event MC, Steve V, kicked things off by getting on his bull horn and saying that the first person to snake Nate Likewise would win some product. Needless to say, about 5 people snaked Nate in a matter of seconds. Very funny. Let me just say this... MC Steve was absolutely fucking laugh-out-loud hilarious all day long. I've been to many a pro contest, including snow contests with "master" MC The Dingo, and MC Steve is hands down the best/funniest I've ever heard. He had me cracking up the whole day. He was awesome at calling out all the tricks and no one was safe from being ripped upon, especially Market team rider Chris Jones, who was wearing it all day because of his striking resemblance to a certain Toy Story character. I had the pleasure of sitting next to MC Steve during the vert wall portion of the best trick contest. I wonder if he remembers me?

MC Steve spitting hilarity's

As I just stated the format for the day was a jam-style, best trick contest. The first portion of the best trick was the vert wall, which was an extension built on to one of the existing 5-ft transitions. This thing was pretty gnarly, about 3 feet of true vert, but everyone threw down quite nicely on it.

Throughout the day every time someone would wipe out, MC Steve would quickly state in a very humorous tone, "The Market skate shop is not liable for any injuries or accidents caused today." This seemed to be his theme for the BBQ as he said variations of that statement all day long and every time it was super funny. Maybe it was one of those things where you had to be there for it to be funny but trust me it was.

The next four portions of the best trick contest were held on a bright yellow concrete ledge, the hip, the step up, and a flat-down ledge. These were a little bit of a cluster f@#k as everyone pretty much just attacked the features relentlessly. There were almost a few head on collisions during the hip sesh but everyone bailed out in time to save themselves from a wreck. It was a little tougher to pick a best trick during these so anyone who landed something rad got some product.

During the hip sesh MC Steve apparently got a little hungry... "OK new contest" He said, "The first person to bring me a chicken sandwich and water wins product!" I guess no one wanted free gear because it took quite a while for him to get his food. "No one has won the get me a chicken sandwich and water contest yet, free product on the line!" MC Steve should take his act on tour.

For the last event of the day, everyone headed over to the bowls at Edora for the main event. The grand prize, a brand new acoustic guitar, was up for grabs for the best trick. Being a little old school, this was my favorite part of the day. The dudes were carving up the 9 foot bowl reminiscent of the Dogtown days. I've had absolutely terrible luck with cameras this year and after about the tenth picture I took my camera died so I only have a few pics of all the bowl runs. My buddy Jacob Biddle has a cell phone from NASA and he was able to get a couple good shots with that.

There was some unbelievable riding going on during the bowl sesh. Tile slaying, front side airs, 50-50s on the concrete coping of the 9 foot bowl, 360s out of bowl... Insane. Cody Walker, dubbed "Creature Cody" by MC Steve, was by far the crowd favorite. He boosted some pretty big f/s airs out of the 9 and some huge 360s out of the bowl. I've seen this kid skate quite a bit and he kills it. He ended up taking home the best trick award, winning the acousty guitar as well as a new deck and some other schwag.

After to bowl contest, MC Steve directed all the young shreds to get into the 9 for a free-for-all product toss. This was hilarious. The Market crew threw shirts, socks, hats, DVDs and other gear into the pool for the all the kids to grab and they went nuts trying to get their hands on all the free gear.

Well that's a wrap! The Market's 12th anniversary BBQ bash was a huge success. The turnout was great and the skating was even better. The weather was perfect the atmosphere was chill and every one seemed to have a great time... I know I did! Huge props to Market owner Andy Weiss, the Market crew, and everyone else who helped put on such a rad event. I hear there will possibly be another skate bash in June for Go Skateboarding Day, so stay tuned into Hybrid Sessions for updates on that.

Like I said before I snapped a ton of photos so if you want to check out the rest of the pics from the day, you can check them out here.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words... So on that note I'll leave you with the photo that pretty much sums up the entire Market Skate BBQ event...

"The Boned Age" Double Creature Feature

Here are a couple of teasers from the much anticipated new Grenade creation, The Boned Age. The Grenade crew is responsible for past classics such as Night Of The Living Shred, Revenge Of The Grenerds, The T.P.S Reports, and the greatest Grenade creation in my opinion, Smell The Glove. The Boned age is set to drop in September and will feature Danny Kass, Kyle Clancy, Scotty Lago, Lucas Magoon, Sketchy D, Scotty Arnold, Gabe Taylor, Benji Richie, Tyler Flanagen, Louie Vito, and the rest of the Grenade team.

Expect lots of Heavy Metal, shitty Punk music, hilarious antics, gnarly wipe outs and most importantly, incredible shredding from The Boned Age. The first trailer is super funny so be sure to check both of these out!

Zoo York Artist Series "Urbane Jungle"

Photobucket

When Zoo York asked Mark Owens and Matt Owens to design six decks for their artist series, we knew we’d be in for some of their standard-issue graphical, collage-esque awesomeness. What we got, though, is seemingly more — a modern, quirky ode to New York City, the brand that asked them to participate and the riders themselves, each representing unique areas of interest: Architecture, Literature, Food, Art, Transit, and Tourism. Way cool.

New Forum Video Trailer

The Forum crew just released the trailer for their new video project, Forum Or Against'em. As with seemingly every new snow and skate vid these days, this project is shot entirely in Hi Def. Set to release this fall, Forum Or Against'em features the riding of Peter Line, Joni Malmi, Eddie Wall, John Jackson, Pat Moore, Jake Blauvelt, Stevie Bell, Travis Kennedy, Jake Welch, Nic Sauve, and Daniel Ek. This is Forum's 5th team video and actually one of the better trailers I've watched this snowborad trailer season. Anything with Peter Line is going to be rad, should be a sick video.

Check out the hi-res trailer HERE, or just watch below and get stoked!

Ever dream of going to a huge raging party with all your favorite pro skaters? Hanging out with beautiful women all night long? Shmoozing all the industry suits? Well thanks to CCS board shop, you now have a slim to none chance to win a trip to this event. But hey, a slim chance is better than no chance, which is what everyone who doesn't win the contest has.

One grand prize winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to LA with a friend, lunch with the CCS skate team, two VIP passes to the TWS Awards, and a sweet ass digi camera to take pix of the event. The photos you take will appear in Transworld Skateboarding as part of the event coverage. That's really cool. On top of all this awesomeness, you'll be treated to the first viewing of Transworld's new video, which is apparently now called And Now, instead of The Now.

The 100 Worst Album Covers Of All Time

I just stumbled across this little gem and it's pretty damn funny. It's bad enough that 90 percent of these bands/singers even attempted to create music... But I guess when you sound like shit your album cover has to look like shit. The multiple Prince covers that made the list are some of the funniest. Here are my favorites. Check out the whole list here.

Half Cabs Rule

In my never ending search for new Vans, I came across a pretty cool website, Caliroots. They have a freakin huge selection of Vans in every style. Vans are the absolute best shoes to skate in ever. They should rename the Waffle Grip to, feet cemented to board grip. My personal favorite Vans to skate in are the Half Cabs. I found some pretty dope Halfs I've never seen before on the Caliroots website. Check these out.

I also saw these when I discovered Steve Caballero's blog. So sick.

Shane Flood Gets KO'd

So this is a clip from last year's Mongo Pro video, Who Cares. Shane Flood wipes out on this gnarly double pillow line and says some funny stuff. I couldn't stop laughing when I first saw this and, "Should I drink?" became the quote of the year every time someone took a spill. I found the clip on youtube the other day and thought it was worth a look. Who Cares was a sick video, definitely worth watching.

Rage Against The Machine Summer Tour... Sort Of

If there's one band I've always wanted to see and a band worth paying ticketmaster's bend you over and rape you convenience chargers to see, it's Rage Against The Machine. The band broke up in late 2000 with front man Zach de la Rocha starting a low-key solo career while the rest of the band members joined with ex-Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell to form the super group Audio Slave.

After last year's reunion show at the Cochella Music Festival and a few more shows following that, rumors were swirling about a new Rage album and a full blown tour. In the mean time guitarist Tom Morello was successfully touring with his solo project, playing under the alias The Nightwatchman. In February of 2007 he released an album, One Man Revolution. I actually got to see his show in Fort Collins, which was incredible.

So on the set of Anti-Flags video shoot for their new single Bright Lights of America (Anti-Flag opened for Rage on their Battle of Los Angeles tour in 1999), Morello, who is playing a part in the video, sat down with Matt Elias from MTV and Justin and "#2" from Anti-Flag to talk politics. Of course the rumors about the new album and tour were brought up and Morello was tight lipped about confirming Rage being back in the studio recording a new album and going on tour. Apparently Anti-Flag couldn't contain the news and let it slip that they will most likely be opening for Rage once again on a tour happening this summer.

According to the Rage Against The Machine website, the band will be headlining a number of festivals this summer, including numerous dates in Europe and the Lallapalooza festival in Chicago August 1-3. So far, Lallapalooza is the only U.S. stop for the band. Hopefully more dates will be added. As for the Rage/Anti-Flag tour? I can only pray those rumors are true.

Rage has long been one of my favorite bands and I would go ape shit if I was able to see them this summer. One of my good buddies saw them at Chochella last year and he said it was absolutely the best live show he's ever seen in his life. Bastard!

Alterna Trailer - Knockout

From the super cool little film company Alterna, comes their 10th anniversary film, Knockout, filmed entirely in HD. They put out an awesome movie in last years Apples & Oranges, and the new film looks to be just as rad. Alterna's cinematography is so dope. They use a bunch of cable cams to get way up in the sky for the sickest shots. No drop date yet, so stay tuned into Hybrid Sessions for more info. Peep the trailer and get stoked! Click here for a super duper hi-res version or just watch below.

Reno Represent... HOLLA!

Truckee CA, - (April 12th, 2008) – The University of Reno Nevada reigns supreme as the number one college on snow at Red Bull Snow Warz for 2008, as their ski and snowboard teams battled it out to take first and second place...

48 teams from 33 schools fronted up at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort for the war to end all wars, (we hope). In all, 233 competitors hit the hill and were scrutinized by judges, Zach Leach, Shawn Carney, Tim Windell and Pat Bridges.

Teams of 4- 6 riders combined of snowboarders and skiers took the slopestyle course not like freshman wanabee’s but like war torn veterans and threw down everything they had.

The top four scores from each team were taken into account then the top two teams from each heat advanced to the finals. Strategy came into play when the teams were asked to select their top two riders to represent them in the final. School pride now sat on the shoulders of just two. Like final exam time the pressure was too tough for some, but others rose to the challenge and stomped nothing but straight A’s.

With tricks like sweet 900’s it was team UNR AKA“Team Eat Waffles” made up of all skiers that had solid preliminary runs and sat on top of Montana State and Sierra Nevada College going into the finals.

In the finals it was the snowboarders that were putting it all together. Team “Harvard United“ from the University of Nevada Reno, wisely sent Brandon Cocard and Taylor Carlton onto the battlefield to represent them and they didn’t disappoint, launching their team into first place.

Brandon also took individual honors for the snowboarders landing tricks like switch backside 720 nose grab and a front-side 720. “I’m just so stoked on my team, those guys really came through for us, it was all a team effort,” said a very happy Cocard after the event. “It was kind of a last minute thing to enter but the whole team was really into it and it all just came together.

In second it was the skiers from UNR “Team Eat Waffles” rounding out a very successful day for their school. The locals didn’t have it their way though, individual skiing honors went to Chris Collins from Montana State.

The battle has been won, congratulations to UNR they have bragging rights, until next year’s battle is forged and the title of best college on snow is up for grabs again.

Grenade Games 4... "High" in the Mountains

Grenade games 4. The description from the Grenade website says it all. Very Lebowski... These dudes abide.

Photobucket

A way out west there is a group of Radical Dudes, people called them the Grenade Crew. About every time this year, usually around the end of April they get together and have a little Shindig called the "Grenade Games". Reckon it's been about three years going on four they've been doing this. Usually moving place to place, this year I heard they're bringing her back to her birthplace at June Mountain, California. Give n' er 2 days of fun celebrating snowboarding in the sun. That starts Saturday, April 19th and continues on through Sunday, April 20th for those of you interested in that sort of thing. It's gonna be bout $30.00 bucks to get you on hill or $50.00 for both days. Seems they've been doing pretty good planning it out too, gettin' together some events like old time favorites the Bull Rider and Chinese Eyed Downhill. Putting a new spin on others like the Boosted Highest Air and adding a darned entertaining Slopestyle event. Those of ya who just like kicking back, like myself, having a few Sarsaparillas and passing the time; they've got you covered like a prairie dog at a coyote convention. Also heard they're flying out a couple of bands to play live on hill. Just to name a few, The Hounds of Hell, Valdur, Deathpact, and THC will be up there giving us all something to perk up our ears. Got a little after party going too, Saturday night T.S.O.L. and Adolescents are taking the stage at Canyon Lodge. Pretty much all's I can tell ya for now. When I get another tickle in my ear from the wind passin on I'll getcha a schedule goin' . I don't know about you, but I take comfort in this. It's good knowin' they're out there, the Grenade Crew and their Grenade Games, takin' her easy for all us sinners.

Here's a little taste of last years shenanigans...

Snowboard Realms episodes 7,8, 9, and 10

The next four shred-i-sodes from the Capita Canadain, TJ Schneider, document a week of riding in Breckenridge, CO. Breck has been my second home for the last 4 years and this is where The Gonz and I met TJ and his crew. Breck had a sick little early season park set up with 2 good size booters and some tasty rails and boxes. A ton of pros were in Breck that week, since that's where the best snow in the country was. It was so rad to watch all these guys rippin it up. TJ threw one of the nastiest methods I've ever seen, very Jamie Lynn-esque. Be sure to check out all these videos for some sweet ass footy!

Steve Caballero's Blog

Being a rookie to the whole blog scene, I'm constantly searching for new material to post and checking out other people's blogs. I came across an awesome blog called Sirj Skateboarding; this dude has a great site and really does a good job reporting the latest in skate news.

Anyway, I read a bunch of his posts and came across yet another amazing blog.... Legendary skater Steve Caballero's! Cab has been one of skate boardings most influential personalities for years. He's in his 40's and is still rippin it up. He posts a bunch of rad old pictures, some really cool art, and gives updates on his current skating adventures.

Cab was one of the first pro skaters I ever knew about and I've been a huge fan of him ever since. I even wear his shoes. Here are a couple of my favorite Powell Peralta Cab decks I have.

Be sure to check out both of these blogs!

The Black Keys Rock Denver

The weather in downtown Denver may have been cold and rainy Wednesday night, but inside The Ogden Theatre the atmosphere was a bit more... Electric. A sell out crowd was on hand to witness the high-voltage, raw, blues rock of The Black Keys and the band did not disappoint.

The opening band, garage punks Jay Reatard from Memphis, Tennessee, were actually pretty damn good. They played a furious 30 minute set, never taking a break in between songs for chit chat. The drummer looked just like Garth from Wayne's World; long blond hair, thick black glasses, and even the same mannerisms. Hilarious. I took a picture of him but the camera I borrowed for the show took a shit on me and stopped working. But he pretty much looked just like this. These guys rocked and were a great opening band.

After the opening set and as the roadies were setting up the stage, the crowd was buzzing in anticipation for The Keys. The wait seemed like forever but when the house lights finally dimmed, leaving only the eerie blue stage lights to illuminate the historic Denver venue, the crowd erupted. Guitarist/singer Dan Auerbuch and drummer Patrick Carney took their places on stage and proceeded to rock the faces off everyone in attendance for nearly 90 minutes. I felt like a little kid on Christmas. The Keys put on an absolutely amazing performance. The energy on stage and in the crowd was almost palpable.

Carney plays the drums like he's getting in a fight with someone. Auerbuch is one of the best live guitarists I've ever seen. He may not be the most technical guitar player out there but his instrument seems to come alive when he plays it. The set was filled with songs from all their albums. There weren't as many songs as I expected from the new album but overall I felt the choice of songs was great. In a completely amateur move on my part, I didn't bring anything to write down all the songs they played and wasn't able to get my hands on a set list after the show. Some of the highlights from the set were "Girl Is On My Mind," "Stack Shot Billy," "10a.m. Automatic," and "I Got Mine."

I feel the true measure of a band is how they perform live. Any band can get in the studio and through the magic of production, turn out a decent sounding album. On stage however, there's nothing to hide behind, you're either a good musician or not. The Black Keys are one of the best live bands I have ever seen. They have a passion for music and that's very evident during their show. Their music is incredible and it sounds even better live. If you ever get a chance to see them, I highly recommend it!

Like I said the camera I was using stopped working about 3 pictures into the opening band, so here are a few pics from my cell phone. Not really the best quality.
